How to find a lost Android phone

How to find a lost Android phone

Losing a phone is stressful, more so when it belongs to a kid or an older parent. Android has a few solid ways to find one, and they all work better if you set them up before the phone goes missing. Here is what actually works.

Google Find My Device

This is the first thing to reach for. It is built into almost every Android phone and lets you locate, lock, or wipe it remotely.

  • On the phone, turn it on under Settings, then Security. Search "Find My Device" if you cannot find it.
  • To locate it later, open the Find My Device website or app on another device and sign in with the same Google account.
  • From there you can ring it at full volume, lock it with a message and a callback number, or erase it if it is gone for good.

Tracking a child's phone

Google Family Link lets a parent see a child's phone location and manage the device. Install it on both phones, link your Google accounts, and the child's location shows up in the app. You can also share location through Google Maps with trusted family members.

Sharing an adult's location

For adults, the cleanest option is Google Maps location sharing: open Maps, tap your profile picture, choose Location sharing, and pick who sees it and for how long. Apps like Life360 do the same for a whole family circle and add extras like check-ins and driving reports.

When there is no internet

GPS needs a connection to report a location. If the phone is offline, your mobile carrier can sometimes give a rough location from cell tower triangulation. It is less precise, but it is something.

Set yourself up before it happens

  • Back up important data to Google Drive regularly.
  • Keep Find My Device turned on.
  • Use a real lock screen: PIN, password, or fingerprint.
  • Leave location services on so the phone can be found.
