With Windows 10 past end of life, moving to Windows 11 is no longer optional for most businesses. The upgrade itself is straightforward. The way it goes sideways is rushing it: a machine that does not meet the requirements, an app that breaks, or a rollout that takes everyone offline at once. Here is how I run a Windows 11 migration so it stays boring.
Check the hardware first
Windows 11 has real requirements: TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a supported processor. Some machines that run Windows 10 fine simply cannot take Windows 11. So step one is an inventory: which PCs can upgrade, which need a BIOS setting flipped to enable TPM, and which need replacing. You want that answer before you start, not halfway through.
Check the apps
Most modern software runs fine on Windows 11, but the one line-of-business app that does not is the one that stops the office. Before the rollout, confirm your critical apps are supported, especially anything older or industry-specific. Better to find out on a test machine than on the owner's laptop.
Roll it out in waves, not all at once
I never upgrade a whole office in one go. A pilot group first, a few willing users, catches the surprises while they are small. Then the rest goes in batches, so if something does come up, it affects a handful of people, not everyone. Each machine gets a verified backup before it is touched.
The small things that save the day
- Back up before every upgrade. An in-place upgrade rarely loses data, but rarely is not never.
- Keep a rollback path for the first wave until you are confident.
- Spend ten minutes with users on what moved in the new interface. It cuts the support calls in half.
